Yoga For Transformation
The guide to yoga in Big Canoe
“Yoga is not about touching your toes. It is what you learn on the way down.” – Jigar Gor
Yoga is an ancient healing and transformational self-care practice that unifies mind-body-heart & soul and reminds us of our inter-connection with all life.
It’s from a place of enhanced wellbeing that we can perceive and receive inevitable life changes, large and small, local and global, in a more open-hearted, equal-minded, re-sourceful and solution-oriented way.
Yoga teaches us to be the peace we want to see in the world. Join us in this practice of cre-ating peace and clarity from within.
The Beginners Yoga Series in the Wellness Center studio, Wednesdays, 3:45 - 4:45 PM, July 24 – September 25, is a great starting place for students who are completely new to yoga, coming back after a long absence, injury or illness or folks who just prefer a gentle pace. This systematically progressive 10-week format includes yoga asanas/poses, breathing and relaxation techniques, allowing students to gracefully establish the foundational tech-niques and mindset for a safe and fulfilling yoga practice. The cost is $120 for Wellness Cen-ter Members or non-members or $17/drop-in class. Contact Elizabeth for questions or to register – 706-579-0414 – or sign up @ the Wellness Center.
Align & Refine, Tuesdays, 3 – 4PM in the Wellness Center studio and Thursdays in the rac-quetball court and on Zoom, 8:45 – 9:45AM, is on-going, intermediate level class that rein-forces and expands on yogic techniques and is an important stepping stone to the more challenging and intricate Flow & Glow and Hatha classes.
Flow & Glow, Mondays, 9:30 – 10:30AM & 5-6PM, and Wednesdays 5PM in the Wellness Center studio is an on-going, dynamic class that fosters optimal strength, length, balance and aliveness for the intelligently aging body. Sessions incorporate advanced breathing techniques.
Hatha, Fridays 5-6 PM in the Wellness Center studio, taught by certified functional fitness and yoga instructor, Karen Dobson, is a fluid movement power yoga class designed to build strength and flexibility. Power is the mantra.
Yin Yoga, Sundays, 3-4PM in the Wellness Center studio and on Zoom, emphasizes passive, static postures, held for longer periods of time, with muscles in a relaxed state. This way, the dense connective tissues in and around the muscles and joints are revitalized, hydrated, somewhat stretched and ultimately strengthened. Yin style practice is a complement to all other yoga and meditation practices.
Deepening Practices, the last Saturday of every month, 12-2PM in the Wellness Center stu-dio and on Zoom, unless re-scheduled for a holiday weekend, includes a segment of Kundalini breathing techniques, a segment of Yin style poses, ending with a guided medita-tion. A two-hour practice facilitates a deeper sense of release and relaxation. This inner-landscape immersion is the perfect rejuvenating reset from the demands of modern life.
Beach Yoga is an invigoration for body, mind, heart and soul. 5-Fridays, 9:30AM, July 26-August 26, 2024. Pairing yoga with nature can be an incredible experience; the open space invites a connectedness to something much greater, an expansiveness and a freedom that can’t be replicated indoors. A natural, uneven surface like sand enhances the physical benefits of the practice by building the secondary muscles of knees, hips, feet, spine and shoulders and encourages greater focus. The cost is $60/5-weeks or $17/drop-in for Well-ness Center members or non-members. Contact Elizabeth for questions or to register – 706-579-0414 – or sign up @ the Wellness Center.
All of the yoga classes, except the Beginner’s Yoga Series and Beach Yoga are included in the Wellness Center membership. Inquire at the Wellness Center – 706.268.3441 – for resi-dent non-member or non-resident rates.
If you need help determining which level is best suited for you or have any other questions, please feel free to call or email Elizabeth 706.579.0414…

Back on The Golf Course!
"Before I started yoga with you in January 2012, I was tired most of the time, my strength had diminished and I had given up golf completely. I started practicing with you once a week, soon went to twice a week and have not missed yoga practice twice a week since. Six months later, I am a completely different person - I have lots of energy, I have very few aches and pains and I am back on the golf course again - I just had a 43 on the Choctow course - I think it was my best since I have been in Big Canoe, and that is 16 years.
I'm able to take a full golf swing, my handicap is steadily coming down and I look forward to becoming competitive again. I am a new person, thanks to you and your yoga instruction!"
